We tend to think of insurance as protecting against accidents–repairing or replacing our home or car in the event of an accident. But as we progress in our careers, we accumulate assets and responsbilities and the danger of an accident is not limited to our property.

We have heard horror stories about the homeowner who hired a handyman who then fell off the roof…uninsured. Or the person you “bumped” who now has “whiplash.” The media can exaggerate these stories from time to time but a huge part of insurance is covering you against liability–and if you do not have enough coverage, you pay the difference. As a single person renting an apartment, these issues were probably not as obvious as when you have accumulated large savings or equity in your home that you plan to use for retirement or your children’s education.

It’s a good idea to talk with an insurance agent and periodically re-evaluate your coverages to make certain a catastrophe for someone else does not become a financial catastrophe for you.

Protect yourself – if you have significant assets to protect we recomend that you carry $250,000/$500,000 on Bodily Injury (Part 5) of your Mass. Auto policy and at least $100,000 under Property Damage (Part4).  I am sure you have heard of a personal umbrella policy – perhaps you considered it some point . A $1,000,000 policy would probably cost you no more than $175 per year and cover over and above your AUTO and HOMEOWNERS. If you have questions or you would like to discuss this further , please fill out the ”request a quote” form - or give us a call, and we would be happy to discuss it with you.
